Download NowJournalist Erich Schwartzel gives readers an extensively researched examination of how the government of China has become such a powerful force in filmmaking around the world, but especially in the US. Reading this book surprised me with the extent of China' influence over US corporations which produce films. The author first provides brief histories of the US and Chinese cinema industries, as background for an era that saw China's leaders wary of importing Hollywood films. In the second part of the book, the author discusses Hollywood's efforts in the last 30 years to reach China's emerging market of 1.4 billion potential customers. US companies proved only too eager to compromise ethical principles in order to conform to China's censorship, based on numerous behind the scenes examples given by the author. The final section of the book highlights China's growing film industry, which seeks to export the government's vision and values. If this represents a "culture war," then China seems to be winning, extending its influence into even small details of Hollywood films hoping for release there. The author gives many interesting examples about the above, including (perhaps most surprisingly) what patches are shown on Tom Cruise's famous flight jacket in the current remake of "Top Gun". In fact, this book is chock full of interesting stories about US and Chinese films, filmmakers, government officials, and corporate execs, all jockeying for the money and power at stake. Capitalist corporations (and countries) find common ground with China's authoritarian regime at the expense of human rights and free expression. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, which gave me an eye opening introduction to how well China plays the global power "game," which should serve a warning to democratic governments.
