Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland *[ePub]

“[A] gorgeous anthology of fashion images … Leibovitz is nothing less than America’s greatest living photographic portraitist … she has changed fashion photography forever.”  – Anna Wintour Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz’s surprising account of her encounters with fashion over five decades ‘Looking back at my work, I see that fashion has always been there,’ Annie Leibovitz observes in the preface to Wonderland. ‘Fashion plays a part in the scheme of everything, but photography always comes first for me. The photograph is the most important part.  And photography is so big that it can encompass journalism, portraiture, reportage, family photographs, fashion ... My work for Vogue fueled the fire for a kind of photography that I might not otherwise have explored.’  Includes 350 extraordinary images (many of them previously unpublished) featuring a wide and diverse range of subjects: Nicole Kidman, Serena Williams, Pina Bausch, RuPaul, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga, Matthew Barney, Kate Moss, Natalia Vodianova, Rihanna, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Karl Lagerfeld, Nancy Pelosi. Why Must Read Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland?

At 450 pages, I had high hopes for this book! Having already purchased her earlier book, I had some expectations when going into this one. While there are many good photos, I found the overall selection of photos, and layout of the book, to be quite frustrating and disappointing. I've attached some samples. You can see how there are some very odd choices of some photos to turn into 2-page spreads while other (great) photos are only showed as an in-lay with multiple per page, taking up just a couple inches. Do we really need a 6 page layout dedicated to Caitlyn Jenner, or several 2-page spreads showing a blurry photo or empty room instead of some of the great images that appeared in vogue and other magazines? Overall it left some to be desired. I've attached some photos which I also think were good, and you can see how the mix between odd choices just doesn't blend as well with the others. There's also some carryover from the earlier books, but presented at a much smaller size in this one. I feel that making it a 2-volume set would have fit the book better than the current layout. Another small issue was with the shape of the book (mostly square) which affected it from displaying photos nicely as if it were a wide book. This means larger photos split across 2 pages instead of having dedicated pages to better view them
