Marisa Burke is a top-rated, local anchorwoman at one of the most respected local ABC affiliates in the country. She enjoys celebrity status, six-figure salaries, a gorgeous home, and beautiful family. But rather than reporting the news, Marisa suddenly becomes the subject of it when her husband, an admired educator, the father of her two young girls, and the man she truly believed was her loving soulmate, was arrested for unlawful sexual relationships with underage boys. What was even more excruciating, Marisa was forced to endure the shame and embarrassment of anchoring the same newscasts in which the personally gut-wrenching news stories about her husband’s charges were reported. Marisa Burke’s shocking memoir, Just Checking Scores reveals what happens when a person at the top is brought down by public humiliation into a world of deep despair and what Burke did to channel her suffering and anguish into defiance and strength. Download NowAnyone who was from NEPA knew this story and despite what he/she would admit freely, everyone had their opinion and thoughts. Having personally known the subject of this book, I had a natural curiosity from the beginning. Some of the facts in this book were familiar to me but I truly did not expect to learn about how deviant and deceptive Mark Kandel truly is. This is a book is a roller coaster ride of love, success, fame, and betrayal. It's also a lesson in facing adversity and proving resilient in the darkest of circumstances. I read this book from beginning to end in one afternoon. No matter how well you knew them (or thought you did), this book is a real life depiction of how the seemingly perfect life you've built can implode in the blink of an eye. We all know that societal monsters come in all forms, shapes, sizes and socioeconomic classes but it's nearly impossible to accept that one of those monsters could be someone you called a friend, let alone someone you built a life with. Mark Kandel is not a unique individual. There are thousands of men living double lives and just as many victims left in their paths. You needn't be familiar with him specifically to appreciate this book, nor do you need to know his family to feel the pain they endured since his crimes were brought to life. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who heard the story, had an opinion and most especially to those who thought they knew the truth. Furthermore, it's a must read to anyone who has ever been betrayed by a man who seemed like Prince Charming but turned out to be the devil... or has a suspicion that they may be. It's a hard lesson in life, relationships and surviving when the odds are stacked against you. I applaud Marisa's courage, strength and tenacity in sharing these truths. I wish her, Racheal & Sarah nothing but peace and love.
