Why Must Read How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation in California?

I'm a professional tax preparer and financial planner, however, I am not experienced in establishing a charity. I'm working on starting an animal sanctuary and have already spent hours digging through the IRS website and old ruling letters for specific requirements on what activities might qualify as a charity in regards to caring for animals. I could only find one specific example given by the IRS which said an organization that neuters cats and dogs for no charge would qualify. So I decided to buy this book for some detailed answers. Unfortunately, the book considers any charities relating to animals, preventing cruelty to children, or sports organizations(among other charites) to be less common and therefore does not cover the topic at all other than to say that the IRS and California secretary of state websites provide great information on the subject and that I should do my own research. AHHHH! I feel like the author could have at least dedicated four or five pages out of the 250 to the subject as charities relating to animals seem to be extrememly prevelant. The book does seem to offer the details needed to establish a charity in many cases, so long as your charity type is covered by the book. It's too late for me to return the book, but hopefully it will be useful to me at some point in the future.
